Last month I saw this awesome looking card game on Kickstarter and didn’t hesitate to get my wallet out and back it. I reached out to one of the creators, Amanda, and asked if she wanted to write a bit more about the game on my blog. I’m not getting a cut of anything sold through the link. I’m simply sharing it as a fan. Here’s some more information about the game.
Hi Everyone! We have developed a card game called Valence that teaches kids advanced chemistry concepts, but is fun and easy to play. Students draw Element cards from the deck and try to combine them to make different Molecules. Each Molecule has a special power (as they do) and many of them interact in the form of real chemical reactions.
The game is meant to be interactive, meaning, if you are going to win you’d better hope your Bases don’t get attacked by your friend’s Acids (then you would be left with just low value Salt and Water cards). We have tested the game with over 100 kids, both in and outside of the classroom, and they genuinely enjoyed it.
We’ve also designed the game so the cards are pieces of art, much like popular games Magic or Munchkin. Each element card is tagged with a unique “Science Ninja” – diverse, spunky characters sporting high-tech goggles, lab coats, and bandoliers with chemical vials.
We have lesson plan materials that use our Science Ninjas comics to teach the basics of atomic bonding that will be downloadable with purchases of the game.
We recently completed a successful Kickstarter campaign and are now selling decks directly through our website.
We hope you and your students enjoy and learn from it!
