The next time you have an extra 11 minutes in class I encourage you to watch the short film Caine’s Arcade with your students. The film is about a young boy named Caine who builds a cardboard box arcade in his dad’s auto parts store. He spent the entire summer waiting for customers to play in his arcade, and on the last day of summer something very special took place.
It’s a story about innovation and passions. It’s also about ingenuity and perseverance. I’ve taught a bunch of ‘life lessons’ throughout my years as an educator, but this particular one engages students like no other. After the video you could continue the conversations with your class using these questions as a starting point.
- Why is it important to follow your passions?
- How important is money?
- What is perseverance and when should you give up?
- How can you turn success into something that everyone can benefit from?
- What are your passions?
- How much does luck play into success?
There is also a movement in schools across the county to move towards passion projects or Genius Hour projects. This may be something you would be interested in doing with your class. I had a blast doing it with my 6th grade students one year. Although I have never participated in a maker space project with students the have also evolved at a rapid pace recently.
