Newton's Laws Station Lab - Mad Science Station Lab Series

The next station lab in my Mad Science Station Lab Series covers Newton’s Law’s.  I created station labs for each of the 3 laws, or you can download the bundle and mix and match the stations for a full day of student-led learning on Newton’s Laws.

The station labs are intended for students to drive their own learning and for the teacher to facilitate any questions that may come up throughout the process.  When I run the station labs I generally hang out in the Explore It! station because it is where the students are likely to have the most questions and some possible misconceptions could be created.

Each station lab is broken into 8 different stations and has task cards and signs for each station.  Each of the Newton’s Laws lab stations will challenge the student to learn the information using a different learning style.  I have listed what activities can be found at each station below.

  1. Explore It! – The students will be exploring all 3 of Newton’s laws using a variety of demos including balloon rockets, inertia rings, rolling spheres with different masses, and more.
  2. Illustrate It! – The students will be drawing a picture that represents each of the 3 laws.
  3. Read It! – At this station the students will read a quick passage and answer some multiple choice questions about what they have read.  This passages relate to each of Newton’s 3 Laws and how they are applied in everyday life.
  4. Watch It! – Students will view quick videos about Newton’s Laws which will help them understand each of the laws in context with real-world scenarios.  There are a few questions at the end of the videos which students will answer on their lab sheet.
  5. Organize It! – The students will work with a hands on manipulative that will ask them to organize different scenarios into the correct category or law.
  6. Write It! – Students will use complete sentences to answer a couple of quick short answer response questions.
  7. Research It! – At this stations students will go online and play around with some interactive demos that help build their knowledge of Newton’s Laws.  They will be answer a couple of quick questions about the Newton’s Laws interactive demos.
  8. Assess It! – At this station the students will have to answer 4 different questions that are more formal in appearance.  These are questions that could show up on a standardized test.
