Even thought there are 4 different formulas given to our students on the state test (STAAR) it is imperative that the students get plenty of practice so that they are comfortable using the formulas on the test.
I created a 40-card set of task cards that helps students worth through problems on density, average speed, work, and net force.
The formulas that are used in this product are:
- Density = Mass/Volume
- Average Speed = Total Distance/Total Time
- Force = Mass * Acceleration
- Work = Force * Distance
The density problems feature both regular and irregular shapes and the students will have to solve for unknown elements.
The average speed cards include word problems that are based on speed, distance, and time. I have also included distance/time graph that the students have to use in order to find average speed.
The work and net force cards contain word problems that have the students finding all three variables in each of the two formulas.
The way that I used these cards in my class was that I split everyone up into teams of two. I gave each team a set of cards and an answer sheet. I obviously allowed them to collaborate when they were doing the activity, but told them that each team could ask me questions about how to work a particular problem if they couldn't answer it on their own. Most of the students finished it within a 40-minute class period.
You can download the Formula Chart Task Cards from my TPT store.
