What this drawing simplifies
- The path is really a circle. It looks like an oval because we are looking at a circle from an angle, the way a plate does from across the table.
- Not to scale. The Sun is about 109 times wider than Earth, and much farther away than this can show.
- Do not measure the tilt. It reads steeper than 23.5 degrees, for the same reason the path looks oval.
- N and S mark the poles, where the axis meets Earth's surface.
- The dates shift a little each year. June solstice: June 20 or 21. September equinox: Sept 22 or 23. December solstice: Dec 21 or 22. March equinox: Mar 19 or 20.

What you just found
Look at the four axes. They are parallel. Earth revolved all the way around the Sun and the axis never re-aimed once, so the North Pole is always the same pole. That is the reason we have seasons: Earth is tilted on its axis, and because that tilt keeps pointing the same direction while Earth revolves, each hemisphere leans toward the Sun for part of the year and away from it for the rest. The next two steps show what that leaning does.
